Benchwarmer

Well, let's be honest. This might be the most common sort of Hancock sighting: regular reader 'Houx' came across Hancock this morning at 6am while waiting for the 217 bus at Hollywood and Winona. Obviously exhausted from a long night of protecting Los Angeles, Hancock was passed out on a bus bench. Jeremy reports that when he put the volume on his MP3 player to max he could barely hear Hancock's snores.

Hercules Ain't Got Nothin' on This Labor

Having a baby is one of the greatest moments in anyone's life. Except maybe when you're having it in the middle of the 101 at rush hour. Newlyweds David and Maddy were in just that position yesterday evening when Maddy's water broke and their little son decided that March 3rd was going to be his birthday. But anybody who has battled LA traffic knows that the cars move for no man or birthing baby. That's when superheroism comes into play.
David was shocked when his car was lifted right off the highway. Underneath was Hancock himself, flying the couple and their SUV to the nearest hospital. Of course everybody involved probably would have been happier if Hancock had just left the car outside the emergency room as opposed to knocking down the wall and parking the vehicle INSIDE the emergency room, but at least baby Bruce got to be born in a hospital without complications.
And baby Bruce's middle name? Hancock, duh.

The Cost of Doing Business

The Mayor is presenting the City Council with his budget this week and word on the street is that it's another doozy, with lots of money earmarked for the so-called Hancock Fund. I have an inside source at City Hall who says that the Mayor is up to his old tricks again, and that he has tucked plenty of crony handouts into the Hancock Fund number. He's artificially inflating what's already a very high number.
Of course the delivery of the budget means that The Times' worst columnist, She Whose Name Won't Be Printed On This Blog (SWNWBPOTB), is doing her whole Hancock hate schtick again. I found out that the web version of her column gets like ten times extra hits when she writes about Hancock, and a lot of those hits probably come from HWH and sites like us. That's why I'm pledging to not link to her again!
Anyway, her column is the same old same old, calling Hancock a public menace and going on and on about the financial toll. She's got a lot of numbers - and they're pretty high - but she doesn't do the one equation I have been calling for for years. I want SWNWBPOTB to calculate the monetary value of the lives that Hancock has saved and add them up. If that number is lower than the cost of repairing damage (and by the way, LA has a booming construction industry right now), I will close up shop here at Hancock Was Here. But I want to see someone come up with a formula that gives a monetary value to a human life. I don't think even SWNWBPOTB could stoop that low.

You already know what I'm going to say. The thing you're missing, HWH, is that there's not an unlimited amount of money to be spent so that means the city needs to approach things like triage. Sure, there are people alive today who wouldn't be otherwise but the financial burden Hancock is placing on the city is felt in school funding, transit funding, non-emergency infrastructure funding etc.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree, Hancrock.

I think that Los Angeles should be playing Hancock up. Make him a tourist attraction! Heck, I would love to lead a guided tour of all the Hancock hot spots.
